Series: John

Book: John

Scripture: John 11:1-14

God loves to make us wait, but he does it with loving purpose. In verse 3, we read how Jesus learned that Lazarus was ill and dying. Rather than hurrying to his side, he waited two days to go to him. Why? It wasn’t because Jesus didn’t love Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. They were all Jesus’ beloved disciples and he cared for them. Nor was it because they weren’t doing enough for Jesus. Mary is put forth in scripture as a prominent follower of Jesus who was well-known for her devotion and service to him.  This shows us that Christ’s love is not incompatible with our suffering or our good works.
Jesus makes us wait in order to build our faith. The disciples might have believed Jesus was leading them into an unsafe situation, and the sisters might have believed that Jesus had forgotten them.
His intent was to demonstrate his glory, power, and sovereignty to all his followers. But Jesus knew they needed to see his power as he raised the dead so they could believe in him even more. It is in the midst of difficulties that we grow spiritually the most.
Remember: Trials increase our faith. And the only way to build our faith in trials is to walk in the light. Take hold of the means of grace that Jesus has ordained for you to meet with him. Partake in fellowship, take the Lord’s supper, pray, read the scriptures. Move toward him and learn his purpose to transform you into his
