What do you think when you hear the word “evangelism?” Does your mind automatically go to prayer? Prayer produces outreach. The degree to which we seek the face of God in prayer—particularly asking for the heart, opportunity, boldness, wisdom and clarity to reach others—is the degree to which we will see gospel outreach happening naturally in our lives.
We are called to steadfast prayer. The mode of our prayerfulness should be a constant readiness, and the manner ought to be watchfulness and thankfulness (v. 2). We are also called to outward-facing prayer (vv. 3-4). Specifically, like Paul, we ought to ask God to open doors for the gospel so that the mystery of Christ might be declared to the world (v. 3b). Lastly, we should pray for clarity so that nothing may distract from the message of salvation.
How should we apply this to our lives? Create prayer cards. The first can be a written prayer asking God for a heart for outreach. The second can be a list of 3-5 people you believe may need the gospel. The third can focus on one person God may be calling you to evangelize to, and what action steps you believe the Spirit is calling you to execute.
