Worship is Not Waste

Book: John

Scripture: John 12:1-7

Mary’s heart was filled with love for Jesus, but Judas’ was filled with love for himself. For each of us, there are times when we have a Judas in our ear, rebuking worship and work in Christ as wasteful. Worship of Christ is never wasted, however, but the most valuable thing you can do. We can see three things about this in John 12.
First is a picture of our position-seated with Christ (v. 1). Like Lazarus was doing, we will sit at the banquet table with Christ. Christ’s eternal life, the kingdom of heaven, and his righteousness are ours. We ought to remind ourselves of these things and respond by glorifying Christ.
Secondly is a picture of purpose. We can freely offer and pour out what others are hoarding and storing up (v.3). Mary used expensive perfume to wash Jesus’ feet with her hair. This was the best she had and knew her offering of worship was worth the sacrifice. Don’t be deceived: We will always worship something. Don’t waste your worship on something material and finite. Rather, worship Jesus in Spirit and truth; this relationship of worship is eternally valuable and life-giving.
Thirdly is a picture of pride-a cold heart and a stingy hand (vv. 4-7). Judas was fixated on money and wealth, was prideful, and when rebuked by Jesus he betrayed him for money. He tried to hinder worship under the banner of charity.
There will always be a Judas in your life, and maybe in your church- someone eager to condemn. They can’t watch sacrificial love and worship, because wholehearted worship seems wasteful and excessive. We are called to set people free from condemnation, not criticize and judge. There will always be a Jesus in your life to acquit you. If you are being judged for your worship, rest in Jesus’ calling on your life to draw you into life-giving, joyous, and excessive worship.
